I thought writing a blog will be a very easy process, but for non-tech savvy people like me, it’s a whole new learning experience! (*Sigh*). Anyway, I decided to start a blog to share my experience on a journey that started roughly three and a half months ago. It was supposed to be another impossible attempt at losing weight, but it has now become a lifestyle and a story! I am not there yet as I still have more pounds to shed, but man, have I learned something!

To sum up my learning till date: It is definitely worth the world to shed excess weight, and return to a level of fitness comparable to the days when we were young, wild and free (without the booze, weed and other you-know-whats). For the past 5 years, I struggled with an ever-expanding waistline, growing appetite, increasing clothes sizes, and I had all the good reasons to justify why weight loss was not for me. My parents were both on the big side, my dad’s brothers were all generally fat and huge, my siblings, cousins all ended up big in stature, so of course, it had to be genetic for me to eventually gain weight. It is what it is! Considering that a few years after undergrad in dental school, a lot of my classmates and lecturers could barely recognize me, I was living true to my family roots. This was my conviction, and I didn’t care what the world thought, because fat is also beautiful! And don’t get me wrong, being fat is not necessarily a bad thing.

However, being overweight (weight for height and age), is definitely bad and unhealthy for you. I was very much overweight, obese, and had all the symptoms to show for it. Bulging tummy (shirts wouldn’t button without safety pins in between the buttons), I snored at night (boyfriend once recorded my snoring to prove that I was snoring – EMBARRASSING), easily tired and slow, and this one in particular was very upsetting for me, I could never find my size at any True Religion store (Female Section)!

Anyway, two things changed my life for good:

  1. On return from the US sometime in October 2015, my feet were swollen from the flight, and remained swollen for the next five days. I was alarmed! Prior to this experience, my feet will swell when I traveled long distances, but it was normal, and would disappear after a day. This time around, I got really scared, all sorts of thoughts ran through my mind – DVT, Liver disease, Kidney failure, Heart attack…….Death! I had to do something, and I knew it was linked to my weight.
  2. In December, in my usual way of ‘making mouth’, I told boyfriend I was going to lose weight in 2016. He said he had heard it all before and it will never happen. Kudos to him though for loving me the way I was, he really did! I told him I would lose the weight, and he said it was impossible because I had tried many times and failed. So I said, I would drop my weight to 80kg (I weighed 96.6kg at the time), and he said I COULD NOT DO IT. That was the challenge I needed! I had to do this to prove to him and to anybody (iyalaya anybody….) that I could and will!

It has now been three months after, and I have lost 15kgs, increased my target to 75kg, and still working on dropping additional weight. I have learnt a whole lot, made some amazing friends in the process, and I think my experience has been an inspiration to some.

I will share my experience here as often as I get the free time to post something, and take you through all the simple things I did that I believe worked for me! Stay Tuned!IMAG1242[1] IMAG0967[1] IMAG1404[1] IMAG1967[1]

  4. Funke, wow…!!! Your determination and adherence to a planned fitness schedule is amazing. My first thoughts in reading your blog are ‘being fit is a journey comprising of lifestyle choices’. Thanks for the inspiration and for sharing.
