#14. Travelling and your fitness regimen – Day 1

I have come to that time of the year when my travel schedule gets crazy. Over the next couple of weeks to months, I will be on the road and in the air a lot, so I am concerned about the implications of the disruption to my daily diet and work out routine. One thing for sure is I am determined to pay very close attention to what I eat during my trips and also determined to spend a minimum of 30 mins daily doing some moderate to high-intensity workout routines, whether it is running outdoors or doing some body weight training indoors. Sticking to one’s regimen during travel is particularly difficult especially when you have to live out of hotels, and having business lunches and dinners during the trips. How do you also manage with the time change if you travel to a different time zone, and if there are no opportunities to do any outdoor activities or there are no indoor facilities to support your workout routines? These are discussions I have had in the past with colleagues who regularly work out and since I have now joined the fitness addiction club, I will chronicle my experience handling the change(s).

I am currently in Kenya; very beautiful country. Lovely view, great food, amazing scenery. The hotels are fantastic and the hospitality is divine. In the past, trips to Kenya for me were awesome because I looked forward to all the great hotel rooms and food! Yes! Very good food! I am also a big fan of great hotels; that’s another thing that chops my money, good hotels. But back to the matter. On a good day, coming to Kenya would mean eating all the niceties that the hotel has to offer and looking forward to the meals, while seating most of the day through meetings where you engage in almost no physical activity.

Therefore, this has to be a different trip for me in 2016. I have decided to keep a journal of everything I will eat on this trip and my exercise regimen. Unfortunately, today’s my day one and I got here with a terrible flu – nasal congestion, body pains, mild fever, headache (It’s not malaria – I know), so I can’t do any running or exercise besides walking. I plan to run tomorrow , if my body is back in shape, hopefully. Perhaps, the running would help knock out the flu faster. I am just too down today, and would love to lie in bed all day if it were possible.

Breakfast – Breakfast was buffet, as it usually is at most hotels. I decided to go for: IMAG2657[1]

  • Baked beans
  • 2 eggs – sunny side up
  • 1 hashed brown potato
  • 1 chicken sausage
  • 2 pieces of beef sausage
  • Yoghurt
  • A cup of black coffee and honey

This is actually more than my typical breakfast, I know! (*Guilt tripping*) I will compensate for the intake later. I also decided to eat well because of my flu, I need to boost my immunity so I can return to good health quickly. Took some aspirin after breakfast to relieve the pain and other flu-like symptoms.

Lunch – Also a buffet lunch today. Again, unlike my regular day, when I often don’t do lunch, if I have had breakfast, I decided to eat something. So I had:

IMAG2659[1]

  • Lots of Broccoli
  • 2 pieces of grilled chicken
  • Steamed fish stuffed with vegetables
  • Carrot and raisin salad
  • Cabbage and spinach mix with 2 slices of boiled egg
  • Water

Glad I didn’t feel full after lunch. I was just OK. I have no plans for dinner today. Will probably just do water infused with lemon to help with the flu.

As earlier mentioned, I don’t think I will work out today. I am really not feeling great, and will take things easy. Tomorrow should be a lot easier for me to do something, hopefully go for an early morning run before 7am, and off to a good start. Stay tuned; I will share my daily activities throughout this trip as much as possible.

Cheers.
